I’ve been half-heartedly trying to convince myself I need a GMT for the past couple of months and as a result have spent an embarrassing amount of time trawling through countless articles on ‘5 best GMTs!’.
I initially started on YouTube, but I don’t want to hear all the other fluff they chat about to pad out a 10 minute video, especially when it’s the SAME options EVERY TIME.
If you’re looking at luxury you’ll see a list with a Rolex GMT, a Tudor Black Bay, a Longines and Grand Seiko sport models. Possibly a Breitling or Cartier thrown in.

If you’re looking for more affordable options you’ll get a list with the likes of Nodus Sector, Farer Lander IV, Baltic Aquascaphe, Jack Mason, Seiko and Christopher Ward.

I get why the same watches appear again and again. They are good, they are crowd pleasers and if I’m a social influencer who wants to crank out a fast video or article, using the first 5 watches that come up on a quick Google search is the way to go.
There’s nothing wrong with any of these choices (the Farer is one I’m particularly taken with), but if you’re anything like me the reason you keep hunting through list after list of ‘Best Top 5 X Watches!’ is because you’re craving something a bit different. A watch that has good specs, but hasn’t been stuffed down your throat by social media so much that you’re already sick of the sight of it before you’ve even had it on your wrist.
Here are my favourite under the rader GMTs that I never see appear on listicles. Usually I would include vintage options on my lists, but I have zero experience with vintage GMTs, so I’m not swimming in those waters today.
1. Heinrich Taucher 2 GMT – €1,192.44

These come in a range of cool colourways and house a Swiss Sellita SW330-2 Elaboré. It would usually be an ambitious case diameter for my slim wrist, at 41mm, but with a lug to lug of only 42mm, I could definitely pull this off.
German made and with 200m resistance and a divers extension buckle, for all the imaginary diving I do.
2. Oak and Oscar The Humboldt GMT – $2,175.00

Oak and Oscar aren’t an unknown microbrand, by any means, but their offerings don’t often make the cut on lists. I’m loving the clean styling of this one, but it definitely comes at a cost.
A Swiss Sellita 330 movement, 39.5mm diameter and 46.8mm lug to lug, along with 200m water resistance.
It comes in black, blue and white colourways, with white definitely my favourite.
3. Batavi Geograaf – €849

I stumbled across one of these on eBay and was smitten. I’d never heard of this Dutch brand before, but love the style of this GMT as well as some of their other offerings.
This one comes with a Swiss Soprod C125 movement, 200m water resistance, 39mm in diameter and 48mm lug to lug, so would wear quite big for me, but given its reasonable price I think I could compromise on the size. A whole rainbow of colour options are available.
4. Core timepieces Fury GMT – $599

Another reasonably priced option for the list and something a bit more exciting from the brand that brought us the switch blade handed ‘Seven Sins’ watch.
This one uses the Seiko NH34A GMT movement in its 42mm case with a 49mm lug to lug. By going with the Seiko movement the Fury can provide a titanium bracelet and 300m water resistance while still keeping the price down.
5. Aevig Thule GMT – €749

Although I couldn’t include a vintage option on the list today I can provide vintage styling. I love the Mido x Seiko-esk vibes from the Thule and there is something deeply appealing about those indices.
Another Seiko NH34 GMT movement with a titanium case. 39mm x 48.5 mm dimensions and a likely more than adequate 100m water resistance.
I hope you found something new to look at on this list and enjoy exploring some more unusual brands and watches.
Happy watch-journeys!
Kaysia.
Great suggestions! The farer was my fave as well from the usual suspects, but I love some of these new ones.
