Here at The Escapement Room we believe that watch collecting can have a beneficial impact on all aspects of our lives. So, we have enlisted a watch collector to participate in our occasional series “Ask a Watch Collector Anything” to share the knowledge and wisdom that comes from collecting.
Our first collector is Ted Furman of Gunnison, Colorado. He is a thirty-six-year-old IT professional with a major hospital chain and is married with two small children. Most importantly, he owns nearly forty quartz watches, mostly G-Shocks, and has been seriously collecting watches for eight years. Our questions come from all over the world and cover a variety of topics. Without further ado, here is Ted:
Ted: Really glad to be here, let’s dive right in…
My wife and I just had our first child. I am back to work now but I am so tired that I find myself sitting and staring at a computer screen. Our pediatrician says that our daughter is teething. Is there anything we can do to help her sleep better so that we can all sleep better?
– Robert, Harrisburg, PA
Ted: Wow, I remember those days, whew. Well, I can tell you that a DW5600CA-8 is one tough cookie. It has a resin case that is shock and fall resistant. It has 200 meters of water resistance. I bet that you could give it to your little one to gum at night and it should give you a little time to sleep. Nothing beats a G-Shock.
My parents are getting up in age and I am concerned that they have not done enough estate planning. I don’t want to seem like I want anything, that’s not the point. If they want to give everything to charity, that is fine by me. It is just that I want them to be able to make that choice for themselves. Every time that I broach the subject, I get waived off dismissively. Is there a better way to approach this subject?
– Melissa, Lenexa, KS
Ted: Yeah, I don’t know, that is a tough one, end of life decisions and all. But you know what won’t die? A GAB2100-3A. It has a solar cell that will outlast all of us. When we are gone it will still be telling accurate time in thirty-eight time zones.

My girlfriend and I have been dating for seven years now. We get along so well. We are the best type of friends. Lately, things, you know, have been getting a little stale, nothing serious, just needs a little more or something. I was thinking, she has this friend, let’s call her “Linda” and I was wondering if I should maybe suggest that Linda hang-out with us more and be friends with us, if you get my drift. I just don’t want to start a fight, you know.
– Michael, Gulfport, MS
Ted: I hear you. Well, once when I suggested something like that while on vacation in Cancun, I got slapped so hard that the teeth on the left side of my head were loose for days. And I slept on the floor. It was bad. But do you know what’s good? The GA700RC-1A. It is a Super Illuminator with the best LED light in the business. If you do find yourself in that situation you will want some light, just to see who is doing what to whom.

I am going down to Bristol for a few days on business. There used to be a Thai place there, I can’t remember the name. Great peanut sauce, not too sweet. Do you think that it is still in business?
– Ian, West Rainton
Ted: I have never been to Tennessee, so I can’t “volunteer” an accurate answer. But I do know that I value accuracy and the DW6900RGB-1 is accurate to within fifteen seconds a month. You just can’t beat a G-Shock.
I came home from university last week and my little brother (age 14) was wearing a Twilight Sparkle t-shirt. Should I say something to him or to my parents? I don’t want to be related to a brony.
– Amy, Thompson, Manitoba
Ted: I don’t even know what that is. I can tell you what does sparkle, a Baby G BG169R-2C. I bought one for my wife for our anniversary. Even though she doesn’t wear it, I know that she just loves it. Can’t beat a Baby G.

Do you think that Gil Evans gets enough credit for his work with Miles Davis? I am really partial to Sketches of Spain.
– Rahib, Dhaka
Ted: I know what I would take to Spain: something that can stand up to the sun and would tell me what time to take a siesta. I would have to be a GM2100-1A, only 72 grams. Can’t beat a G-Shock.
My longtime boyfriend and I are in a little bit of a rough patch. He seems distracted and distant. Lately, he has been talking a lot to my friend Linda and he keeps wanting her to hang out with us when I want us to be alone. Am I being paranoid? I think that he is about to go too far and say something that he can’t take back. I will end him. Is it all in my mind?
– Jennifer, Gulfport, MS
Ted: It is probably all in your mind. However, if he gets a GA700RC-1A, the one with the really bright LED illumination than, yes maybe, um, sorry.
🤣😂
