SOTC (Part Uno)

Well, it is near the end of another year of collecting and it is time for the inevitable State of the Collection (SOTC) post. These are fun for me because I get to tell you my watch stories about watches that mean something to me. I get to reveal something about myself, my relationship with my collection, and show you some neat watches. I can’t fit all of my collection into just one post, so I will treat you to the top three that have entered my collection this year. The other 968 watches I will have to save for later posts. You will have to wait for number 765, that one is a doozy! Let’s hit the “return” key and get into it:

TrollDeep Double Back

TrollDeep has really impressed me this year with their innovative and novel approach to watch-craft. They have really upped their game. The whole conceit of the JLC Reverso is that the watch face could be reversed to protect it from damage during polo matches. Well, we don’t play polo so much anymore now that we aren’t allowed to have indentured servants so there is less need for that sort of thing. We do have some extreme sports however, and recently I started playing Full Contact Pickle Ball. It can get really bruising. With the game-changing two caseback design nothing can get damaged. Each side has a stainless steel caseback to protect the 17 jewel movement inside. Perfection. What will TrollDeep think of next?

Narrengold Schwedenschanze

We are fairly informal at the Colony. We don’t want to be constricted by conventional norms of behavior or dress. Less is more, none is best. And why do they insist on calling it a “colony”? We are not colonizers. We are not claiming part of any territory for our free way of life. Join us if you want, just bring enough sunscreen. Anyway, we have “Luau Night” and I wanted a dress watch to match the occasion and my piercings. Narrengold takes German Black Forest fashion sensibilities and makes a pretty watch. It was all anyone could talk about after Luau Night (and “allegedly” what I did with the pineapple).

Nusuma Reta G5809k9

This year I got my first digital watch courtesy of high-tech brand Nusuma Reta. The G580k09 can track fourteen time zones and has alarms that go off every twenty-seven minutes. It automatically resets the time to noon every sixteen hours. Can’t beat a Nusuma Reta. Maybe I should get the manual. This watch was given to me after my uncle’s untimely passing. Uncle Steve was the “Hobo Philosopher of Traveler’s Rest.” After the rigor mortis broke, he was found clutching this in his right hand. It really has meaning to me. Uncle Steve was a character. His koan “Buy me a sandwich or else!” is still spray painted on the loading dock of the post office in Traveler’s Rest.

I will start to write up the rest but these are the ones that mean the most to me right now.
